Georges Island

Boston Harbor, MA

CDW was contracted to perform multiple environmental services on the island by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) as part of island-wide building projects and utility upgrades. Retained originally by DCR in 2009 in response to Department of Environmental Protection compliance issues, we completed a full evaluation of outstanding release issues of subsurface oil impacts as well as lead in surface soils. We worked with DCR to bring the sites back into Massachusetts Contingency Plan compliance, and with the contractors to develop plans to identify and delineate the extent of subsurface contamination during their work.

CDW also assisted with the assessment and mitigation of unknown releases, underground storage tanks, asbestos, contaminated building materials, utilities, and pockets of lead contamination, while also evaluating potential indoor air issues from residual groundwater contamination. The results of this initial environmental compliance work allowed for the facility upgrade work to continue, enhancing the recreational benefits of the island resources, while at the same time protecting the construction workers, public, and future users. All site recreational amenities were completed on schedule in 2010. Future environmental compliance work will follow a risk-based, targeted approach to avoid interrupting site services and the public’s use of this important Commonwealth asset.
